Glee Club alumnus & former board member Scott Belden passes away
The Glee Club lost a loyal alumnus and long-time friend Feb 28, 2008.
Mr. Scott Belden ('71) passed away from cancer at the Mayo Clinic around 9:30 AM today. Scott sang in the Varsity Men's Glee Club for four years. He also sang in the Metropolitan Chorale of Waterloo for 2 years, and the Les Hale Chorale for 28 years. Mr. Belden was one of the first board members of the Les Hale Endowment Fund, and was one of the first Bob Byrnes Kingpins, donating funds to help secure the future of the Glee Club. His reason for leaving the board of directors was due to his cancer diagnosis. Scott was very loyal to the Glee Club and, with his wife Myrna, traveled on at least two of the overseas tours with the Glee Club as an alum. "Scott was my best friend," said Dr. Les Hale, former Glee Club director. "He was a man without guile, who loved to do for others, was utterly dependable and loved physical labor ... I never asked him for any help or a favor or advice but what he willingly gave me was his best. We will miss him deeply." Fellow board member Lee Thompson said, "Scott was one of those guys who was totally dependable, always there, always smiling, a real prince of a fellow. I'll miss him." Scott Belden loved music and choral singing, and was a stalwart advocate of the UNI Varsity Men's Glee Club. His friendship, guidance and involvement with the Glee Club will be greatly missed. |
