2006 Variety Shows a resounding success
The 29th Annual UNI Varsity Men's Glee Club Christmas Variety Shows are ones for the timecapsule. They were performed December 1 and 2, 2006 at the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center in Cedar Falls. These were the 67, 68, and 69 consecutive sold-out shows since 1988.
The two and a half hour show was filled with the Glee Club performing more songs than ever before. The Glee Club performed their full repertoire of holiday favorites, including several new songs, one of which was written especially for the UNI Men's Glee Club. Also, many auxiliary acts were made up of Glee Club members, including 2 pieces by the Glee Club's sixteen-member "Camerata", and a barbershop quartet. The annual Glee Club play, "A Superhero Christmas" had the audience in stitches. The piece that garnered the most applause was "Sing Noel", featuring The Northern Iowa Children's Choir singing with the Men's Glee Club. The children's choir was conducted by Mrs. Michelle Swanson, who was a Glee Club accompanist when she was a student. One highlight occurred on the Saturday evening show, when it was discovered that UNI President Benjamin Allen and his wife Pat were in attendence. During the segment when Santa and the emcee asked audience members what they wanted for Christmas, they sought out Mr. Allen. His answer was "Peace, and bigger state appropriations", which was met with a mighty cheer. Many Glee Club Alumni and Friends attended at least one of the three weekend performances, and attended the after-party at "Neighbors" pub and grill. Planning is already underway for the 30th Anniversary Christmas Variety Shows, December 7 and 8, 2007. |
