Walking tour leads to an extraordinary performance
A walking tour of Oxford University led to an unforgettable private performance by the UNI Men's Glee Club, March 15, 2006. Earlier in the day, the Glee Club was given a tour of some of the 39 colleges that make up the prestigious university. Some of the UNI students visited the chapel at Keble College (see photos from Day 6), and sang "Salvation is Created" inside the beautiful neo-gothic sanctuary. Despite the lack of first tenors, the sound was impressive, and the guys wondered how the music would sound with the full power of the Glee Club. The tour guide arranged for the group to return after dinner, and at 7:00 pm, the Glee Club made the 10 minute trek to the chapel. The chapel impressed the young midwesterners. Dr. Barrett instructed the Glee Club to form a large circle around the pews, and 2 digital recording devices were switched on. In addition to "Salvation", the group sang "Ave Maria", "Dulaman", and "Behold Man", all a capella. Then the small group formed a circle around the altar area and performed "I Believe", "Go Lovely Rose" and "Set Down Servant". There was no audience, which made for a unique performance. The guys sang simply for their own enjoyment. The sound was so overwhelming, some members of the group were brought to tears. Several members mentioned that it was one of the most memorable moments they ever had singing with the Glee Club. The guys then celebrated at their favorite Oxford watering hole, "The Kings Arms", a 399-year-old pub located at the corner of Holywell Street and Parks Road in Oxford, England. |
