In the 50 years since it's founding, The UNI Varsity Men's
Glee Club has had five directors...


Dr. Les Hale founded the University of Northern Iowa Varsity Men's Glee Club on October 1, 1960 and, during his 14 year tenure, created one of the most popular groups on the UNI campus. Dr. Hale introduced "Brothers, Sing On!" to the Glee Club, and the choral anthem is still performed on every Spring Concert to this day. (more)

Mr. Bob Byrnes became director in 1974. He initiated the Christmas
Variety Shows in December of 1978. Bob led the first Glee Club tour of
Europe in the spring of 1980, and took the group overseas a total
of 13 times. He directed the Glee Club for 30 years, until his death
on May 28, 2004. (more)

Dr. Brad Barrett was named director in 2004, following the death of
Bob Byrnes. He reactivated the Glee Club's Iowa Tour, and led the Glee
Club to several southeast Iowa venues in 2005, and northwest Iowa concerts
in 2007. Dr. Barrett led the group to it's first-ever tour of Ireland, Wales
and England in 2006; Poland and the Czech Republic in 2008. (more)

Professor Fred Kiser served as interim director of the UNI Varsity Men's Glee Club for one year, starting in the fall of 2009. He led the Glee Club on the group's 16th European Tour, including a fourth performance at St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, in May, 2010. (more)

Dr. John Len Wiles is Assistant Professor of Choral Conducting at UNI where he conducts the Varsity Men's Glee Club, Cantorei, and UNI Singers and teaches graduate students in choral conducting. (more)
